This website is the idea of David Alley, the trustee for the Mahanain Trust (the owner of this website) and was developed over the period of 6 weeks by Jemuel Rodriguez and David Alley (Web Technology Queensland)
David Alley spends a lot of time driving and uses the time to think rather than listen to lots of music. This "idle" time for the mind often produces ideas. This idea came when thinking about Alex Tews million dollar homepage.
This website is an initiative to raise money for several purposes - firstly and foremostly to reduce the debt that David Alley and his wife Marie are under at the present time. The plan is to sell one million dots (pixels) and remove their home loan and their many other debts.
The secondary income comes from the auction and sale of the artwork - with 100% of those proceeds going towards orphans in Cambodia. If the amount raised is large, it will be split at the discretion of the owner, and the proceeds going to several orphanages in a number of countries. (Eastern Europe, Western Africa, India and Cambodia) We also hope to raise money through money $1 subscriptions with all the proceeds doing to the orphanages too.
In addition to being a commercial concept, and a charitable fundraiser, this website is also an experiment which will see how human beings work together to create a large piece of artwork where no one person has the sole artistic license. The end result may be 'nothing pretty' and that may be the novelty of it, or the end result may turn out somewhat nice. This experiment will add something of a random chance element to the artwork.
Finally, although yet to be confirmed, this website could possibly break a Guinness Record for the most artists in an installation. In Israel one piece of artwork involved over 28,000 artists. This virtual artwork has the potential to break that number.
